BIOGRAPHY
The Smell's premiere "party-prog" residents to release new LP and embark on first east coast tour.

No fair, it's Bad Dudes. Risen from the ashes of So Cal weirdo-rock outfit Miracle Chosuke and augmented with members of some of LA's most exciting (and polarizing) bands, Bad Dudes picks up where Chosuke left off. Incorporating blistering guitar riffage, Devo-esque synth lines, shimmering melodies, shifting time signatures and impossibly tight drumming, Bad Dudes expand upon Chosuke's hypertech synthpunk sound and conjure up what devoted followers have dubbed "party-prog."

Bad Dudes epitomize face-melting cerebral energy, while maintaining body-moving hooks. "Body over mind" is a common mantra at Bad Dudes practice. With a few highly coveted 7" singles and a debut LP already circulating on the underground, the band will release their follow-up full-length, Eat Drugs, April 15th on Retard Disco (Hawnay Troof, Epsilons).

Eat Drugs ventures into slightly more accessible territory without losing the teeth and muscle of their self-titled 2006 debut. Songs like the opener "Mjölner" and "Secret Protector" are aggressive math rock instrumentals true to the spirit of their previous output, and are sure to win over fans of bands like Battles or The Fucking Champs. "Heterosaucer" heads into psych-pop territory, while the angular hooks of "Suez" (a song about Jaws) flirt with the smart punk template laid out by bands like Mission of Burma and the Buzzcocks. The anthemic title track "Eat Drugs" is classic rock taken to a neo-futuristic level, with its relentless drums, hot wiry guitar riffs and sing along verses.

Bad Dudes will surprise you every time you see them, most likely at The Smell, where they can very often be seen and heard sharing the floor with locals The Mae Shi, No Age, Abe Vigoda, HEALTH, Bipolar Bear and many others. Keeping it all in the extended family, Eat Drugs features appearances by members of Ozma, Upsilon Acrux, Silver Daggers, and Epsilons. An "Eat Drugs" remix by The Mae Shi is forthcoming.

Details on their first east coast tour will be announced soon and a European tour is in the works for the fall. Don't sleep, don't even blink.

PRESS QUOTES
"Think Daft Punk's experimentation with layered cacophony, only with a much harder edge. The healthy sprinkling of dance grooves and punk rock 'tude make this an unmitigated party starter." - Alternative Press

"One of the better LP's of 2008 has arrived… Provides a fulfilling buzz." - High Times

"We'll spare you the are you bad enough to rescue the President" references but, yeah, there is something kind of arcade-fiery about these guys. Proggy and quirky, their sound is an homage to the relatively limited sonic palette that videogame composers had to work with in the mid '80s: When you can only make three or four different kinds of bleeps and blorps, why not go nuts and mess with shifty time signatures, twitchy melodies and shoes-in-a-dryer beats? Of course, Bad Dudes have a bigger selection of sounds to work with, and "Heterosaucer" doesn't just go for a chiptune thing, though there is a nice little 8-bit freakout that pops up after the halfway mark and streamlines itself into the whole melee groove pretty seamlessly. For a band that's dubbed "party prog," they reconcile those supposedly opposite halves pretty well, teasing out a faux-"Pretty Woman" riff and repeating it until it starts to run sideways and mutate, then throwing it at the rhythm section to be shredded into fine powdery math-rock debris. Bonus points for the pretty solo psych-guitar outro and holy-shit drums throughout." - Paper Thin Walls

"Screw Mary Antoinette and her "Let them Eat Cake." Instead, take the advice of The Bad Dudes, who named their album Eat Drugs. If the title isn't enough of a hint, we'll tell you it's some wigged-out psychedelic rock- also affectionately called "party prog" by fans. Take "Heterosaucer" - this track self-combusts with paranoid energy. Mid-song, the dudes break out chords from Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman" and then pulverize it with intense drums and frenetic riffing. Like any good trip, you've got to experience yourself to believe it. More good news? The album Eat Drugs is out April 15th." - RCRD LBL

"Bad Dudes at Pehrspace: Smashing together new wave, prog rock and post-punk, the dudes in Bad Dudes turn out to be some bad mothers on their second CD, Eat Drugs (Retard Disco). The local band is composed of former members of Miracle Chosuke with contributions by various folks from Ozma, Epsilons, Silver Daggers and Upsilon Acrux, and they’re all super-tight, brainy and adventurously creative musicians. Loopy synthesizers and knotty guitars become entangled on such frantic math-rock instrumentals as “Preteen Wolf” and “Mjölner,” while “Secret Protector” encases slithery synth lines in bone-crushing hard-rock guitars. With its jaggedly metallic stops and starts, “Vanity Cane” sounds like the work of angry robots gone amok. Filtered disembodied alien voices break up the instrumental action by crying out among the busy, boxy riffs of the space oddities “Heterosaucer” and “Suez.” The dazzling (and sometimes dizzyingly intense) musicianship is always impressive, although it’s a bit of a relief when the intricate complexities give way to a catchy shout-along melody on the title track. Sometimes it’s better to hang all that fancy fretwork on a simple hook." - Falling James, (Music Pick) LA Weekly

"Eat Drugs is a manic masterpiece of ADD-fueled rock, constantly shifting from their trademark videogame style to party anthems and intelligent (but wild!) rock’n’roll." - LA Record

"These guys epitomize the SoCal weirdo-rock scene better than any other band I've seen in a while. The chugging guitars, omnipresent hooks, frenzied drums, and sweetly crafted melodies all retain an eerie, futuristic feel, perfect for dancing or taking drugs to in some Echo Park dive bar. An added bonus is that you can actually sing along to the lyrics in many parts of the album. Just be careful not to let the title track’s chorus get stuck in your head–that happened to me last week and it’s still in there." - XLR8R

"Los Angeles spazz-punks Bad Dudes can play more notes in a song than most bands play on an entire album. Their latest, Eat Drugs (Retard Disco), balances synthy Nintendo shred with Zappa-like skronk." - Paper Thin Walls

L.A.'s premier spazztastic "party-prog" quintet. This band is so good, it's ridiculous they're not followed by paparazzi 24/7 or on the cover of Kerrang! every single month. Analogy alert: Bad Dudes sound like surfers (from the future) and new wave punks (from the past) playing a broken Nintendo (the 8-bit kind) at a raver party. And everyone forgot their ritalin. - Prefix Magazine

“It’s about damn time that LA’s “party-prog” fivesome Bad Dudes released some new material. Who else will lead the frothy hordes of Angeleno indie robots with a taste for the technical and the rump-shaking? The title track off Bad Dudes’ forthcoming second album Eat Drugs bops along with all the 8-bit rhythmic spunk and space-punk keyboards of their eponymous debut (2006), but it’s got a more streamlined structure befitting the populist sentiment at its core: “I wanna do drugs/But I’m afraid of drugs.” Stay tuned for a remix of the song by The Mae Shi.” - Prefix Magazine

"Some of the most energetic and quirky progressive music I’ve ever heard. Indeed, this album is a unique experience, showcasing originality rarely found these days." – Delusions of Adequacy

“The LA math rockers Bad Dudes assembled one hilarious clip for their song “Eat Drugs” from vintage rock videos from the ‘70s and ‘80s. And for whatever reason, they included Information Society’s Kurt Harland on roller skates. Some bits are more of a stretch than others, but the Devo part is uncanny. Bravo, gents.” - Eat Sleep Drink Music
